Omega-3 fatty acids are essential components of the human diet. They serve as structural components of cell membranes and are involved in processes ranging from brain and eye health to cardiovascular function and the body’s inflammatory response.

Although DHA and EPA are traditionally associated with fish oil, fish are not the original source of these omega-3s. They accumulate them through the marine food chain, which begins with microalgae.

DHA and EPA: Why They Matter

Arachidonic acid (AA), an omega-6 fatty acid found in cell membranes, can be converted into compounds including prostaglandins and leukotrienes. EPA competes with arachidonic acid for some of the same metabolic pathways and can give rise to different signaling molecules.

Inflammation is an important area of research in endometriosis. Studies have found altered inflammatory signaling and prostaglandin activity in people with the condition, which has led researchers to investigate whether dietary fats—including omega-3 fatty acids—may play a supportive role.
